Kinnekswiss Loves

Friday evening in Luxembourg City, and the municipal park is doing what it does best: becoming a stage. Kinnekswiss Loves, the annual open-air music festival, kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday. Ten acts, three days, zero entry fee.[1]

The programming has evolved over the years. What started as a classical music event has become something broader. Friday night is given over entirely to DJs: LADY CARO'ZART, ChiQa, GLN, Hoffi-Zambezi, NOSI, and then Symphony of Unity, the orchestra of the Tomorrowland Festival, closing things out. That last name is an interesting bridge between worlds, a festival orchestra playing a DJ slot at a free park event.[1]

Saturday is the anchor: the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra's traditional summer concert. This is the part that still draws the classical crowd, the blankets-and-picnic-baskets set who arrive early and claim their patch of grass. The Philharmonic playing outdoors, in a park, for free, is one of those things that sounds modest until you sit there and realise the sound is good, the setting is beautiful, and nobody charged you anything.[1]

Sunday shifts again: Englbrt, The Manavelin Collective, and Milow, the Belgian singer-songwriter. A gentler landing, something to ease into the work week with.[1]

The numbers from last year were around 10'000 visitors across the three days. Organisers expect similar this time, helped by a weather forecast that actually cooperates for once. After the heatwave that just baked the country, a park full of music in mild evening air feels like a different season.[1]

There is something to be said for free outdoor culture in a small country. Luxembourg does not have the festival circuit of a Glastonbury or a Roskilde, but it has this: a city park, three evenings, music ranging from electronic to orchestral, and no ticket booth. The Kinnekswiss is the central grass field of the municipal park, and for one weekend a year, it belongs to everyone who shows up.

If you are in Luxembourg this weekend, bring a blanket. The music starts at 5 PM Friday.
