NightmareStresser Seized

The FBI seized the domains of NightmareStresser on Tuesday, one of the world's longest-running DDoS-for-hire platforms. The takedown was part of Operation PowerOFF, a coordinated international law enforcement effort aimed at dismantling criminal DDoS-for-hire infrastructure worldwide.[1]

Before the seizure, NightmareStresser described itself as the "#1 online IP booter" and "the only DDoS tool available 24/7." According to cybersecurity firm Searchlight Cyber, the service had over 566'000 registered users and 52 dedicated servers capable of launching attacks up to 200 Gbps, targeting both Layer 7 application protocols and Layer 4 TCP/UDP protocols.[1]

"Since 2022, the NightmareStresser Booter service was used to launch hundreds of thousands of actual or attempted DDoS attacks targeting victims worldwide," the FBI Cyber Division said in a statement. A seizure banner now displayed on the seized domains references Operation PowerOFF.[1]

This is not the first takedown. The DOJ previously seized the same domain in December 2022, but the service resurfaced. Whether this second seizure sticks remains to be seen, but the pattern is familiar in the booter ecosystem. Domains get seized, operators re-register, the cycle continues until someone gets arrested. The FBI did not announce any arrests alongside this seizure.[2]

Windows 11 24H2 End of Support

In less dramatic but equally relevant news, Microsoft reminded customers this week that Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will stop receiving security updates on October 13, 2026. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 2027. Microsoft says unmanaged systems will automatically upgrade to Windows 11 25H2, which has been generally available since September 2024 as a minor enablement-package update.[3]

Both stories are a reminder that infrastructure you depend on, whether it is a DDoS platform you rented or the OS on your laptop, has a shelf life. One gets seized by the FBI, the other gets deprecated by Microsoft. Plan accordingly.
