On The Doorstep

On Thursday, three incidents of fraud were reported at different locations across the country, with the perpetrators deploying similar tactics each time. The incidents occurred in Sandweiler, Helmsange, and Ernzen.

The perpetrators posed as couriers delivering packages, targeting older residents. On the doorstep, they claimed they could only hand over the parcel if the victim paid fees. The victim then used their bank card and entered their PIN on a reader provided by the scammer. The perpetrators swapped the card without the victim noticing, and later used the stolen cards to withdraw cash or make payments.

If anyone is victim of such a scam, they should contact their local police station immediately. Police advise never to leave bank cards out of sight in such instances, and if there is any doubt about payment, do not complete the transaction. The public are advised to raise awareness among older relatives.

In other news, at around 4.10pm on Thursday afternoon, three work vans were broken into at a business in Huldange, with thieves taking tools from the vehicles. An investigation has been launched.

Three towns, same trick. Someone rings the doorbell, says they have a package, says there is a fee. They hand you a card reader. You type your PIN. They swap your card. By the time you close the door, they have your money. The targets are older people. The police say: tell your relatives. The vans in Huldange are a different kind of crime, but the same principle: take what you can while nobody is looking.
