Thirteen

Between 2015 and 2025, 13 accidents involving people trespassing on rail tracks have been recorded in Luxembourg, with eight fatalities. Seven of those fatalities occurred near level crossings.

Luxembourg rail authorities say the phenomenon of people running across the rails to reach the other side is on the rise, according to personnel from the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL). The highest number of such crossings last year occurred in Petange and Rodange.

The figures came from a parliamentary question from LSAP MPs Yves Cruchten and Claire Delcourt, answered by Minister for Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes.

In response to the risks, the state is continuing with redevelopment projects aimed at eliminating dangerous spots, especially by removing level crossings, such as in Dommeldange.

Currently, there is no legal basis for implementing video surveillance on the railway network, Minister Backes stated. There is also no data available regarding any fines or police reports issued in this context. The ministry's general approach is to prioritise prevention over punitive action, with specific initiatives to raise awareness about railway safety in schools.

Thirteen accidents, eight deaths, ten years. No cameras, no fines, no data. The ministry prefers prevention, which is a polite way of saying they teach children not to cross the tracks while adults keep doing it anyway. Removing level crossings in Dommeldange will help, but Petange and Rodange are still crossings waiting to be fixed.
