Smoke Across the Border

Smoke from the wildfire in the Belgian High Fens has been drifting across the border into Luxembourg, prompting authorities to issue public health recommendations on Sunday.

An Interministerial Assessment Unit comprising the National Environment Agency, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps, the Directorate of Health, the High Commission for National Protection, and weather agency MeteoLux met on Sunday afternoon to assess the situation. Luxembourg remains in contact with Belgian authorities.

At this stage, no significant health impact has been identified. However, exposure to smoke may irritate the respiratory tract and cause breathing difficulties, particularly among vulnerable individuals. Winds are expected to shift gradually to come from the north starting Sunday evening, which could change how the smoke disperses.

Residents who notice smoke or smell it are advised to:

Once the smoke diminishes, residents should ventilate indoor spaces again. The nuisance may occur intermittently depending on wind conditions. These recommendations match those issued by Belgian authorities in affected areas.

Authorities also asked the public not to overload emergency lines. Call 112 only for genuine emergencies.

Yesterday Luxembourg sent 11 firefighters and 3 tankers to help battle the blaze, which has burned roughly 1'600 hectares of the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve.
