Today is a two-event day in Luxembourg. A partial solar eclipse is visible this evening, and a yellow heat alert is in effect from noon until 7 AM Thursday for the south of the country.
Temperatures will reach 34°C in the afternoon, cooling to a low of 26°C in the evening. The heat alert covers the full duration of the eclipse window. If you are watching from outside, you will be standing in 30-plus degree heat.
The partial eclipse means the Moon will cover only part of the Sun's disc. It will not go fully dark. But even a partial eclipse is dangerous to view with the naked eye. Sunglasses are not enough. You need proper solar viewing glasses or a pinhole projector. Regular telescopes or binoculars without certified solar filters will cause eye damage.
The safest way to watch is projection. A pinhole in a piece of cardboard, held over a second sheet, projects an image of the crescent Sun. No direct viewing, no risk.
The eclipse timing: it begins in the early evening, with maximum coverage before sunset. Exact times depend on location, but anywhere in Luxembourg will see the partial phase.
So today: hot, sunny, and the Moon takes a bite out of the Sun. Bring water. Bring solar glasses. Do not bring regular sunglasses and hope for the best.
