Yellow

Meteolux put the southern half of Luxembourg on yellow alert this afternoon. The warning runs from midday through the evening, citing "thermal stress" from elevated temperatures[1].

Thirty-one degrees. Partly cloudy, dry, a few drops of rain possible but nothing meaningful. The kind of heat that sits on your chest if you are not used to it, and Luxembourg is not used to it. The alert lifts overnight as temperatures drop back to something tolerable. Monday has no warning attached.

Across the border, France is mostly sparing Lorraine, though the Vosges are under watch. Temperatures between Longwy, Metz, and Nancy will reach 28 to 32 degrees. Belgium has the entire territory under yellow, with thunderstorms possible in the south[2].

Yellow is the gentlest alert in Meteolux's four-tier system. It means be aware, not be afraid. Drink water, avoid the direct sun between noon and 4 PM, check on anyone living alone who might be vulnerable. The real heat, the kind that kills, comes in orange and red. Luxembourg has not seen those levels this summer.

Still, 31 degrees in a country that built its architecture for cold is its own kind of event. Stone buildings hold heat like ovens. Air conditioning remains a luxury, not a standard. The city becomes a different place in August, slower and quieter, the people who can leave already gone to the coast or the mountains.

The alert will pass by morning. The advice will not: drink water, stay shaded, and do not underestimate what a yellow alert can do to a body that is not prepared for it.
