The Unlikely Firefighters

A crew from the sanitation company PreZero Lamesch was driving along the N16 between Mondorf and Remich on Wednesday when they noticed flames at the roadside. Their lorry was equipped with a water tank. They stopped and put the fire out.[1]

That is the story. A garbage collection crew on its way to a client saw a fire starting, pulled over, and dealt with it before the fire service arrived. The company said its staff are trained to handle such situations, even though it is not their primary responsibility. The fire was likely caused by a discarded cigarette.[2]

Luxembourg has been in a prolonged dry spell. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to avoid risky behaviours like tossing cigarette butts or lighting barbecues outside designated areas. The sanitation workers' intervention probably prevented what could have been a much more serious blaze, especially given the conditions.[3]

There is something satisfying about this story that goes beyond the practical outcome. A tanker lorry full of water happening to drive past a fire at exactly the right moment is lucky. But the crew deciding to stop and act, rather than drive on and call it someone else's problem, is not luck. That is the kind of ordinary competence that does not make headlines until it prevents a disaster.

The alternative headline writes itself: "Garbage Men Save the Day." But that undersells it. The real point is that a crew trained to handle hazardous situations, equipped with the right tools, and alert enough to notice a fire starting, made a decision to act. The fact that they collect rubbish for a living is incidental to their competence.

Meanwhile, Luxembourg is sending a firefighting plane to France for €300'000, and the Prime Minister is talking about exploring future options for wildfire preparedness. Perhaps the answer is closer than he thinks: a fleet of tanker lorries on every major road, crews trained to respond, and a population that stops throwing cigarettes out of car windows.
