Direct to New York

More than 25 years since Icelandair dropped its Luxembourg-US route via Reykjavik, and a quarter century after Luxair's own six-month transatlantic experiment ended, there is fresh momentum to reconnect the Grand Duchy to the United States by air.

The US Ambassador to Luxembourg, a year into her mandate, has called a direct New York route her "top priority." Talks are reportedly underway behind the scenes, with one particularly interesting detail: the possibility of US customs pre-clearance at Findel, letting business travellers complete entry checks before departure and walk straight off the plane at JFK[1].

The political backing is broad. The Minister for Mobility and the Minister of the Economy have both voiced support. The Economy Minister made the practical case: people sometimes forget how many international headquarters sit in Luxembourg, and a direct US connection makes it easier for those companies to operate and grow[2].

Luxair's CEO welcomed the initiative but was candid about the constraints. Luxair does not have aircraft capable of long-haul flights and is not in a position to operate the route itself. The airline is, however, ready to partner with a US carrier that would add Luxembourg to its network. The decision ultimately rests with an American airline[3].

It is easy to be skeptical. The previous attempts failed for economic reasons, and the aviation landscape has only grown more competitive. But Luxembourg's airport is preparing for a record 5.7 million passengers this year, with terminal expansion plans already in motion. The business case is stronger now than it was in the late 1990s. And pre-clearance would be a genuine differentiator, something not many European airports offer.

The ambassador kept details close, declining to share specifics until an official announcement is ready. But the fact that conversations are happening at multiple levels, between governments, airports, and airlines, suggests this is more than wishful thinking. Whether it materializes into an actual route announcement remains to be seen, but for the first time in decades, a direct Luxembourg-New York flight feels plausible rather than improbable.
