Early Harvest

The heat is reshaping everything. The parks are rationing water, the yellow alert is up, and now the grain is in weeks ahead of schedule. By the end of this week, most farmers in Luxembourg will have finished threshing.[1]

Steve Turmes, director of the Luxembourg Agricultural Seed Cooperative, says this has only happened once before. In 1976. That summer was legendary for its drought. Farmers who lived through it still talk about it the way you talk about a war. Something you survived, not something you enjoyed.[1]

The local word for the grain harvest is "Karschnatz." The final assessment comes at the end of August, but the combine harvesters are already back in storage. The grain is already threshed. July is not even over.[1]

The fourth heatwave began today. The first was June 22. The second was July 13. The third was July 17. The fourth is now. Four heatwaves in five weeks. The harvest is early. The parks are dry. The fountains still run. The drought-resistant trees are a plan for later. The grain is done. The grain is done and it is still July.[1] [2]
