The Bridge Fuel That Burned Its Bridge

Natural gas was always called a "bridge fuel." The idea was simple: it burns cleaner than coal, so you use it while you build out renewables, then you cross the bridge and leave it behind. The bridge was supposed to be temporary. The bridge was supposed to end somewhere.

This week, Meta crossed the bridge, turned around, and burned it.[1]

Meta has quietly left the RE100, a global corporate clean energy initiative whose 444 members pledge to source 100% of their electricity from renewables. Apple, Google, and Microsoft are still in. Meta is not. The Climate Group, which runs the initiative, updated its reporting requirements to be more rigorous, and Meta could no longer meet the technical criteria. Not because they tried and fell short. Because they built 10 natural gas power plants in Louisiana to feed a single data center.[2]

Seven and a half gigawatts. That is enough electricity to power South Dakota. For one data center. For one company. For a product, AI, that has not yet proven it can generate enough revenue to justify a fraction of that cost.

Meta told reporters it is "continuing to scale up investments in renewable energy" and that leaving RE100 "does not change its goal of matching its electricity use with 100 percent clean energy." This is the kind of sentence that sounds like a commitment but is actually a press release. Matching electricity use with clean energy is not the same as using clean energy. It is an accounting trick. You build a gas plant in Louisiana, you buy solar credits in Arizona, and you call it even. The gas plant still burns. The credits still exist on paper. The atmosphere does not care about your spreadsheet.

Meta is not alone. Microsoft signed a deal with Chevron last month to supply natural gas to a data center in West Texas. Google has been linked to similar partnerships. The entire AI industry is quietly walking back a decade of clean energy promises, and they are doing it while the climate is literally on fire. Europe is in its fourth heatwave of the summer. Luxembourg hit 35 degrees this week. Fires are burning across the continent. The timing is not subtle.

The justification is always the same: AI needs power, and it needs it now. Renewable energy takes too long to permit, too long to build, too long to connect to the grid. Gas is fast. Gas is reliable. Gas is already there. So the bridge fuel becomes the destination, and the bridge becomes the road you live on.

Here is what a single 1-gigawatt gas-powered data center running 24/7 puts into the air every year: 438 metric tons of nitrogen oxides, 149 metric tons of fine particulate matter, 61 metric tons of sulfur oxides, 298 metric tons of carbon monoxide. Those are not abstractions. Those are asthma rates, cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia. The people who live near the plants breathe it. The people who use the AI do not.[3]

Natural gas leaks methane at every stage: drilling, extracting, transporting, burning. Methane is 80 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2 over a 20-year window. The bridge fuel is not cleaner than coal when you count the leaks. It is just better at hiding the damage.

Meta joined RE100 in 2016. It met its annual renewable matching goal in 2020. It maintained that commitment for six years. Then AI happened, and the commitment became inconvenient, and the commitment was dropped. Not paused. Not renegotiated. Dropped.

The tech industry spent a decade telling us it was different. That it was clean, that it was green, that it was not like oil or coal. It turns out it is exactly like oil and coal. It just had better marketing. The moment the product demanded more power than renewables could deliver quickly enough, the marketing went out the window and the gas plant went into the ground.

The bridge fuel burned its bridge. The question now is whether anyone remembers where the bridge was supposed to lead.
