Twenty Point Two

Eurostat released its latest provisional data on renewable energy in the EU for 2025. The share of energy from renewable sources in the EU's gross final energy consumption grew from 9.6% in 2004 to 26.2% in 2025. The target for 2030 is set at 42.5%, which would require an average annual increase of 3.3 percentage points from 2025 to 2030.[1]

Among all EU countries, Sweden takes the lead, with 65.4% of its gross final energy consumption coming from renewable sources, achieved through solid biomass, hydropower, and wind energy. Finland (53.0%) comes second, relying on the same resources, while Denmark (48.2%) ranks third, with energy sourced mainly from solid biomass, wind, and biogas.[1]

With the Social Climate Plan put forward to support households and businesses facing rising energy costs, and continued efforts to accelerate more sustainable practices, Luxembourg still ranks as the eighth-lowest country, with only 20.2% of its gross final energy consumption coming from renewable sources. When looking at gross electricity consumption, Luxembourg ranked among the bottom three, with 23.3%, ahead of only Czechia (19.2%) and Malta (11.2%). For context, Austria leads electricity at 90.8%, Sweden at 89.2%, and Denmark at 77.7%.[1]

Earlier this month, the CELL energy transition scenario said Luxembourg could reduce energy consumption by 70% by 2050. The grid held at 5% reserve margin during the heatwave. The country is the best in the world for quality of life. It is also the eighth-lowest in the EU for renewable energy. Both rankings are about the same country. One measures what people feel. The other measures what the country burns. Luxembourg burns 20.2% from renewables. Sweden burns 65.4%. The EU target is 42.5% by 2030. Luxembourg needs to add 22 percentage points in five years. The EU needs to add 16. Luxembourg is further behind than most.[1]
