Best in the World

Luxembourg City has once again been named the best city in the world for quality of life, topping Deutsche Bank's 2024 "Mapping the World's Prices" report for the second consecutive year. The study evaluates cities across a wide range of categories, including safety, healthcare quality, cost of living, and practical factors such as average commute times. The Grand Duchy's capital leads ahead of Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Vienna in the global ranking.[1]

Luxembourg City's prime position is partly due to its robust economy. Despite high living costs, residents enjoy an average net monthly income of 4'542 euros, the sixth highest worldwide. Free public transport, introduced in March 2020, further boosts the city's appeal by helping residents save on commuting expenses.[1]

However, life in Luxembourg City does not come cheap. For newcomers without property, finding accommodation can be a major hurdle, as rental prices are the highest in Europe. Many private services also come at a premium. Taxi rides, for instance, are particularly expensive, only Zurich and Geneva cost more for a 5km trip.[1]

Luxembourg City scored well in specific categories, placing seventh for shortest commute times and fourth for low air pollution. Munich jumped to fourth place, climbing eight positions, alongside Vienna. Frankfurt ranked sixth. London placed 47th and Los Angeles 49th, largely due to long commute times, severe air pollution, and acute housing shortages.[1]

Today, this blog has written about 3,461 incidents on public transport, two violent incidents in Bonnevoie, a knife threat on Rue de Thionville, 518 litres of stolen diesel, a bulletproof vest worn by a minister on patrol, 426 victims of violence helped by a centre that went 24/7 two months ago, and the key factors residents consider when choosing a home, with size and price at the top. The city also has free public transport, the seventh shortest commute times in the world, and the fourth lowest air pollution. It has the highest rents in Europe. It is the best city in the world for quality of life. For the second consecutive year. Both things are true.[1]
